Common Foot Concerns

Keeping feet and toenails healthy is one of the simplest things you can do for your overall health and mobility. By noticing concerns early and having them fixed, you are on the path to trouble-free foot health.

Are you suffering from any of these common foot concerns?

Nail Fungus

Fungal infection of the nail (onychomycosis) is very common. It begins as a white or yellow spot on the tip of your nail and can cause your nail to harden, discolour or crumble as the infection gets worse. You may experience discomfort or see the nail separating from the skin.
Preventing infection is easier than treating nail fungus once it’s developed.

– Choose footcare professionals who use quality, sterile instruments
– Strengthen your immune system
– Keep your hands and feet dry
– Use an anti-bacterial soap daily
– Wear thongs or sandals in places where fungus thrives. E.g. swimming pools, change rooms or gyms

Cracked Heels

Cracked heels are exactly what their name implies – small cracks in the heel of your foot. They commonly occur in Summer when we wear open shoes that allow the feet to dry out too much. Cracked heels that are left untreated can result in fissures which could lead to infection. Several health factors contribute to cracked heels. Remove dry skin* and moisturise feet daily to prevent cracks. It’s also important to drink water daily to ensure our skin stays hydrated.

Calluses

A callus is a toughened area of skin that has become thick and hard due to continued friction or irritation. Although they aren’t generally harmful, they may sometimes lead to infection or ulceration.
Wearing properly fitted shoes can help to reduce the chance of developing calluses. Minor calluses can be treated with a foot soak to soften skin and then sanding skin gently with a pumice stone. A professional may use a callus shaver to remove any that don’t respond to this treatment. Ensure they use sterile equipment to prevent infection.

Corns

Like calluses, corns are hardened layers of skin caused by frequent rubbing or friction. They develop most often on the top and sides of the feet. Again, properly fitted shoes help with prevention. Pay attention to your feet and notice where there might be extra pressure before a major problem develops.
Feet have less fatty tissue and elasticity in their feet as they get older and this can contribute to a higher incidence of calluses and corns. Check with a podiatrist if you have ongoing problems, as it may indicate issues in bone structure or your walking style.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are one of the most common causes of toe pain. It occurs when the toenail grows into the skin on the toe. Inflammation occurs when the toenail breaks the skin and can also lead to infection. Proper toenail management is important in the prevention and treatment of ingrown toenails. Totally Toes has qualified staff who are experts in toenail cutting to prevent ingrown toenails and manage minor issues. For major ingrown toenails, we’ll always recommend you seek advice from your podiatrist.

A preventative approach is always better for you than treating issues once they arise. Many foot concerns can be prevented with a daily footcare regime and expert help with toenail cutting.
